The Village of Valemount regulates open air burning within the Village in an effort to ensure that all burning is done in a responsible manner and does not pose a potential risk to people or property. Any person wishing to start open air burning within the Village must first obtain a permit from the Village office. A burning permit for any form of open air burning is required at any and all times of the year. The Bylaw Enforcement Officer may issue a permit based upon satisfactory and safe weather conditions that adhere to provincial regulations.
Burning is only permitted for brush material such as tree limbs and branches, bush trimmings, leaves or raked grass. Burning of other domestic waste such as construction materials or treated wood is not permitted. Open air burning should be conducted at a safe distance from buildings, structures, trees, bushes, other combustable articles as outlined in the Village of Valemount Open Air Burning Bylaw. The burning permit holder is ultimately responsible for controlling and extinguishing the fire, and for any potential damages caused by the fire.
Backyard fire pits and cooking fires are allowed between 7:00 am and 1:00 am without having to obtain a permit from the Village, so long as the fire is properly contained and monitored.
The Fees for Buring permits are as follows:
Applicants who are not the property owner, such as tenants, must have consent from the registered owner.
Any fire or smoke from open air burning shall not create a nuisance for those in the surrounding area. As an alternative to burning, residents are encouraged to haul their yard waste to the Transfer Station free of charge to improve air quality.
